Sweatpants have become a staple piece in people’s wardrobes and they are not just a piece to lounge in or play sports in. Not only have they been designed to remain comfortable, but they have now been designed to be stylish and more high fashion than ever.
Our primary association with sweatpants is relaxation and only those that did sports or were fond of streetwear wore them in everyday life. If you are new to wearing sweatpants on a regular day you may find it difficult to find a style that suits, you and your own personal style.
Best Styles and Shapes
Now that this item of clothing has become mainstream, sweatpants come in different styles and therefore now suit a variety of peoples personal clothing tastes now.
For those who appeal to the streetwear style aesthetic, you will find they prefer the style of stacked joggers, this is down to their layered look that folds around the ankle. A great style if you aim to emphasize your sneakers.
This simple change from the bootcut sweatpants you might be used to wearing will add an element of elegance to your casual chic aesthetic and can obviously be altered to your personal preference. To really match the aesthetic of the look, make sure to pair these pants with a baggy beanie, designer backpack, metal link watches and chain to really stand out.
You can add an element of nostalgia into your outfit, depending on which design you choose. For example, you may want to add a touch of the 70’s into your style by wearing a pair of flared sweatpants. Designed to be fitted at the thigh and flare out towards the bottom of the leg from the knee down. Perfect if you are looking for a style of joggers that elongate your silhouette.
It is not difficult either to find a pair that also feature the classic 70’s inspired patterns that are bold and colorful. Perfect for those wanting to add that colorful flare into their wardrobe especially in those seasons full of concerts and festivals.
If you are jumping on the wide fit band wagon, you may want to look into boot cut sweatpants. Designed so that the leg Is the same width all the way down to your ankle. This look is extremely flattering as they can accentuate your figure and even elongate your legs.
Their designs do not stop there. However, with the advancements of fashion in recent years we have seen a surge in demand for slim fits, fleece-lined, cargo style, and even eco-friendly material sweatpants. The list is endless; it just takes you trying a few of them on to see which best suits you.
Styling Sweatpants For Your Body Shape
Much like anything, all styles will not suit everyone. Finding the middle ground for your style is key, the common rule of thumb is that your sweatpants should be tapered but a little looser in the crotch and thighs. This will ensure you have increased comfort without sacrificing mobility, as there is nothing worse than being restricted due to a piece of clothing.
It is worth nothing that both men and women approach styling differently. Men prefer the more relaxed, baggy look or more tapered sweatpants depending on the occasion and sneaker choice. Meanwhile women will gravitate towards more high-waisted styles that are tapered to suit their cropped t-shirts better.
Your body type will also come into play with your decision. What is flattering on one person may be a detrimental style on someone else.
For those with a slimmer frame you may want to consider slim fit or tapered pants as they will create more shape to your look without overwhelming your silhouette.
Those with a curvier shape, may look towards high waisted or slightly looser styles of sweatpants as they will look more proportional and create a more balanced outfit.
The aesthetic build is a little different, as they can either with the tapered or baggy style depending on where they are built up the most. The key component is to ensure that the sweatpants are not too baggy that they get in your way but are not too tight so that they restrict your range of movement.
You should also consider height when choosing sweatpants with cropped sweatpants recommended for petite individuals and flared or baggy styles for taller individuals.
Tips For Picking Sweatpants
Knowing both your aesthetic and body shape will help you find the perfect styles of sweatpants for you. A key tip when trying them on is to check how your sweatpants feel especially when sitting down. Some may restrict you from sitting down comfortably and you may find that the material digs in, whilst others may have a pool of extra material created. The sitting test will tell you if the rise, fabric and tapering will allow you to have natural movement.
Final Thoughts
Finding the right sweatpants is much easier to find than it used to be. There isn’t essentially one style that is currently trending, instead it is more about finding a pair that mixes your style with convenience so that you can go about with your daily activities whilst still putting on a fashionable front.
